Flu Guidance for Parents


How to Recognize the Flu


Fever over 100 F with a sore throat or cough, and with or without the following
 

*Nasal congestion

*Runny Nose

*chills and shaking

*Muscle aches

*Abdominal upset such as diarrhea or vomiting

 

TO prevent the spread

*stay at home when for at least 7 days after symptom began or 24 hours after symptom free, whichever is longer.

*Keep sick member in a separated area away from well ones and have only one person care for the sick family members.

*Cover you cough/sneeze with a tissue and dispose of used tissue in trash.

*Wash hands often and correctly, using soap and water for at least 15 second before rinsing and drying or use an alcohol based hand sanitizer.

 

Treatment

*consult your primary care provider about the use of medications including antiviral medications (Tamiflu, Relenza, others) for the treatment of influenza.

*Use Acetaminophen or Ibuprofen for fever and muscle aches

*Get plenty of rest

*Drink plenty of fluids.

 

Seek Emergency Medical care if person….

*Has difficult breathing or chest pain

*Has purple or blue discoloration of the lips

*Is vomiting or unable to keep liquids down

*Has signs of dehydration such as dizziness, decreased or absence of urination or lack of tears when crying.
*has seizures

 

***Do Not give Aspirin to those 18 years old or younger****
