IMPROVE YOUR SOL TEST SCORES BY USING THE TEST TAKING STRATEGIES below or the ***Online SOL TEST TAKING STRATEGIES POWERPOINT***(CLICK HERE) |

|
|
On the day of the SOL test: ü Eat breakfast. ü Arrive early. Don’t be late. ü Stay away from negative people. They can decrease your confidence level. ü Take a moment to relax before the test. This will reduce your anxiety. ü Bring that CAN-DO attitude! ü BELIEVE IN YOURSELF! ü Decide to do your best!
Before the SOL test begins: ü Have the teacher provide you with: 1.a pencil, 2.a calculator (for math or science), and 3.blank sheets of paper to use once the test begins.
Once the SOL test begins: ü Read the instructions/directions carefully. ü Do a quick "mind dump" of information you don't want to forget on the blank sheet of paper provided.
During the SOL test: ü Read each test question carefully. ü Read it more than once to make sure you understand what is being asked. ü Highlight italicized or CAPITALIZED words in the question. They can change the meaning of a question. ü Answer the easiest questions first. This will boost your confidence! ü If you don’t understand the question, rewrite the question on the blank sheet of paper in a form that you can understand. ü If you don’t understand the question, draw a diagram or a picture to help you understand what is being asked. ü Keep your positive attitude as you continue to take the test. ü Don’t panic! Remember you have the tools to be successful. ü When a question has a graph, table, or picture with it, you must use it to answer the question. It’s just not there to look pretty! ü Cover up the answers while reading the test question.
How would you answer the question? ü Try to decide what the answer to the question is before you read all of the choices, but be sure to read all answers before selecting one. ü Eliminate unlikely answers first. ü Eliminating two alternatives quickly may increase your probability to 50/50 or better. ü READ ALL OF THE ANSWER CHOICES. ü Remember that for each question, you are looking for the BEST answer. ü If you do not read all of the answers, you may pick a possible answer, but not the BEST answer. ü Watch out for "NOT TRUE?" ü Remember to reverse your procedure and eliminate truth. ü When a question is multiple choice (where you have to pick A, B, C, or D), immediately rule out the “obviously-wrong” answers. ü Look within the test question for a clue to the answer. ü You may find the answer by reading the question. ü TRY EVERY ANSWER. Try out every answer. By considering each answer, you can be certain that you choose the BEST answer. The first answer may sound good, but another choice may be a better answer.
Before submitting your answers: ü Read all the test questions again with the answers that you have chosen. ü This will be your last chance to correct wrong answers. ü Take a deep breath. ü Stretch your neck, arms, and shoulders. Relax. ü Mentally rest for a minute. ü Read all the test questions again with the answers that you have chosen. This will be your last chance to correct wrong answers.
Submit your answers or turn in your SOL test: ü You have come to the conclusion of your test. ü By this time, you realize that you knew more than you thought you did and you survived the test. ü Submit your answers! ü BREATHE! ü CELEBRATE the conclusion of your SOL test, knowing that you did your best!
