Course Description

Prerequisites: 11th grade status preferable. Will accept 10th grade level students if space is available. Students need good reading and math skills. Students will be expected to meet all of the course goals and be able to demonstrate their understanding of all underlying concepts. Instruction will be heavily based on application of project based learning, with a minimum of lecture and demonstration therefore attendance is imperative.

Course Description: The course requires student research, management and labor. Students will work in teams and individually, as assigned, to complete projects and assignments. Auto Service Technology is a two year program for students interested in the automotive field. The program is certified by NATEF/ASE (National Automotive Teachers Education Foundation and Automotive Service Excellence, the organization that certifies automotive technicians.)

This course is taught to meet automotive industry standards. The students can not only pursue careers as technicians, but as parts personnel and service advisors. The Auto Service Technology class is divided between classroom theory and hands on lab work dealing with some of the latest computerized equipment. Students are expected to be here every day to learn the skills necessary to work on today's vehicles.

Course Content and Objectives:

The eight areas in Auto Service Technology are:

Engine Repair
Automatic Transmission
Manual Transmission
Electrical
Engine Performance
Heating & Air Conditioning
Brakes
Suspension & Steering



 

 

Certification

This course may assist the student in preparing for the following certification examinations, national assessments, or licensure examinations approved by the Virginia Board of Education:
  • Automotive Technician Examination administered by National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE). Certification of skill in automobile service and repair.  Examination is considered a “pathway” examination to full ASE certification in a specialty area upon completion of required work experience.
  • Automotive Youth Education Systems (AYES) Exit Examinations. Certification of skill in automotive service and repair. Examinations are considered “pathway” examinations potentially leading to ASE industry certification.
  • National Automotive Technicians Education Foundation (NATEF) End of Program Test Series Examinations (Pass any two NATEF, End of Program Test Series, exams)
  • Parts Specialist (ASE)—(Pass any one exam from Parts Specialist Test Series)
