Course Description

Prerequisites: Students grade 11 and 12 and grade 10 if available space, must demonstrate self discipline, willingness to work, good attendance, strong math and science background are beneficial.

Course Description: In this program students lay out, fabricate, erect, install, and repair wooden structures and fixtures, using hand and power tools. Instruction in common systems of framing, construction materials, estimating, and blueprint reading is included.

Course Content and Objectives: Carpentry is a competency based education task course. State approved competency list is used for instruction. To advance each student as far as they can progress on the state competency list, making students ready to enter the work market as a carpenters helper.

Certification

This course may assist the student in preparing for the following certification examinations, national assessments, or licensure examinations approved by the Virginia Board of Education:
  • Basic Principles of Construction: Residential Construction Academy Examination (Thomson Delmar Learning/Home Builders Institute)
  • Carpentry Assessment (NOCTI 1014)
  • Carpentry, Level One National Construction Career Test (National Center for Construction Education & Research) (NCCER)
  • Carpentry: Residential Construction Academy Examination (Thomson Delmar Learning/Home Builders Institute)
