High school seniors from Wise County, Dickenson
County and the City of Norton, Virginia, interested in
the health field, particularly nursing, enter the
preclinical phase of the Practical Nursing Program.
Three hours a day are spent in the nursing laboratory or
class room. The remainder of the day, the students
return to their respective high school for the academic
courses needed to graduate. Any vacancies not filled by
high school seniors may be filled by adult students who
have completed high school or passed a GED test.
For the clinical phase of the program, the students
affiliate with selected extended care facilities,
Mountain View Regional Medical Center, Norton Community
Hospital and Wellmont Lonesome Pine Hospital. The
students commute daily for a period of 36 weeks. Time is
divided between patient care areas and classroom theory.
