Major renovations and additions to the school were started during the summer of 1999 and completed in the spring of 2001.  Additions to the original structure included a two story classroom addition of 19,000 square feet that houses six fourth grade classrooms, two Pre-K classrooms, a music room, a computer lab, a Speech lab, Guidance, and a resource room.  A 12,000 square feet gymnasium with seating for 250, a 2,000 square feet expansion to the Library, and a HVAC system with air conditioning were also a part of the renovations. 

      During the 1999 - 2000 school year, the Wise Primary SPRI Council spearheaded a major fundraising effort with monies targeted toward constructing a playground on Wise County School Board property for the use by the community after school hours.  The playground, designed by Leathers & Associates of Ithaca, New York, was built in five days with the support of 1,000 volunteers in September, 2000.  It is adjacent to Wise Primary School and is located on four tenths of an acre.  The Wise County Chamber of Commerce presented the Pow Wow Playground Committee with its Community Project Award for the year 2000 for work on this activity.  The entire community is proud of what was accomplished by everyone working together to provide an amazing place for the children to play.  Everyone is invited to use the facility at the Pow Wow Playground.

      Wise Primary School is fully accredited by the Virginia Department of Education.  The school has met all of the Federal Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) mandates, and has been a member ofthe Southern Association of Colleges and Schools for thirty-one years.  The faculty, staff, and students received the Superintendent's Award for Excellence in 1989, 1991, and 1998 and the Superintendent's Award for Honorable Achievement in 1999 and 2000.

      The Clean County Program began in 1979.  It has been an ongoing, productive program with a high rate of success which can be seen through the many awards by Wise Primary School.  There have been twenty-three Keep Virginia Beautiful awards. Fifteen first place, five second place, three third place and one Honorable Mention--the most recent being a first place in 2005.  Wise Primary School has also been recognized by Keep America Beautiful, receiving second place in the nation in 1991, 1999, 2000 and first place in the nation in 2002and 2004.

      Wise Primary is located in southwest Virginia in the town of Wise. Wise is a residential and college town located on U. S. Route 23 which serves as the county seat of Wise County.  With an elevation of 2,454 feet, it is the highest town in the county.  The average temperature of the areas is 36 degrees in January and 73 degrees in July.  With an average precipitation of50 inches a year, it is one of the wettest areas in the state of Virginia. 

      Coal mining is the major industry of the area, along with many locally owned businesses.  The Wise County Industrial Park is host to several area industries.  Wise County Health Department, the Clinch Valley Ranger Station, the District Office of Virginia Department of Transportation, Sykes, ad the Wise County Courthouse provides employment for area residents.

      The University of Virginia's College at Wise, originally Clinch Valley College, is located in Wise. It isa four-year liberal arts college. Many of the college's students are involved in the Wise schools.
